Play

Play is whatever I spend time on just because I enjoy it. It covers the books and music I keep returning to, the video games I've lost an unreasonable amount of time to, whichever tech project has my attention at the moment, the perfumery I explore one new fragrance at a time, the bonsai plants I have been working on and waiting on, and the events and workshops I found interesting.

None of it needs a reason, but the reasons exist anyway. People with a hobby, any hobby, have fewer low days and more of the other kind, and readers of books live a little longer than people who don't read them. The games sharpen attention rather than dulling it, and a smell brings back an older and stronger memory than a photograph ever does. A bonsai is never finished, which is the point of it, since a bud today is a branch in a few years and the tree works on you as much as you work on it.

Play is older than culture - animals didn't wait for us to teach them - and there's an old argument that a person is only fully themselves when they're playing, and a newer one that the real opposite of play is depression. My own tradition goes further and calls the whole world lila, the gods at play, made out of joy and for no other reason, which is the only reason any of this needs.

What follows is whatever has held my attention.
